This may look like a typical day of service in the subway, but on closer inspection the keen observer will notice that T-1 trains have changed over to Toronto Rockets. On May 30, three TRs entered revenue service on Line 4 for the first time since the Sheppard Subway opened in 2002.

The four-car trains are running with an Operator and Guard, but will soon be retrofitted for One-Person Train Operation (OPTO), a pilot scheduled to begin later this year. The TTC chose to test single-person operation on Sheppard where disruption to service will be minimal if in-service adjustments are required. OPTO means that the Operator will drive and operate the doors simultaneously. A Guard will no longer be onboard.

By year’s end up to six Toronto Rockets will serve the Sheppard Subway.
