New fare gates were put in service at Main Street Station on March 10. It’s the first station in the subway to get the modern, paddle-style gates, which are scheduled to be system-wide by mid-2017.

Main Street’s entrance is now equipped with eight bi-directional fare gates, six of which will be PRESTO-enabled after testing is complete in a few weeks.

The fare line has two Metropass gates for customers to swipe their pass through on a reader at the top of the gate. A green check mark will appear on the screen and the paddles will open, creating an unobstructed – and wheelchair accessible – entrance into the station.

When the PRESTO-only gates enter service, customers will be able to gain entry by tapping their PRESTO card on the sensor at the top of the gate. Customers paying by cash, tickets or tokens must enter the station via the Collector Booth aisle.

The first stations to see new fare gates will be: Bay, Sherbourne, Wellesley, St Clair, St Clair West, Lansdowne, Dupont, Dufferin, Runnymede, Old Mill, Royal York, Jane, High Park and Christie. Please visit the PRESTO Fare System page at ttc.ca for regular construction updates.
