York University Station turned over to TTC

The TTC officially took possession of York University Station on Sept. 18. It’s the first station on the Line 1 extension to be handed over by the contractor that built the facility.

Group Station Manager Ellen Stassen and Station Supervisor Priyen Patel were the first Stations staff to occupy York University. The station is still deemed a work site as elevator and escalator activation continues.

Stassen is in charge of the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE) Zone, which extends from Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station to Wilson Station. The University Zone, headed by Group Station Manager Janet MacDonald, now stretches from Yorkdale to Osgoode. The other five subway zones remain unchanged.

The TYSSE subway tunnels are scheduled to be handed over to Subway Operations by the end of September to continue with train trials and signal system commissioning.

York University Station will be the site of major safety and emergency simulation on Oct. 25 when the Province of Ontario, City of Toronto, York University and all Toronto Emergency Services will test their emergency preparedness in the largest field exercise ever hosted by the TTC. A second emergency exercise will be held for 905 responders at 407 Station in November.

New signs were  posted at all station entrances announcing to the public that the Line 1 extension will be opening in December. The first day of revenue service is scheduled for the start of the service board period on Sun., Dec. 17.

The TYSSE project is jointly funded by the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario, the City of Toronto and The Regional Municipality of York.
