Friday’s tragic accident

Friday’s (Dec. 19) tragic accident brought home the need for safety to remain the absolute priority in everything we do.

Dear Colleagues,

Friday’s (Dec. 19) tragic accident brought home the need for safety to remain the absolute priority in everything we do.

While the TTC safely carries in excess of 530 million customers per year, we must never lower our guard when it comes to safety and we must constantly look to see if there is anything more we can do to keep our customers safe.

For that reason, and in light of other recent incidents involving reports of TTC vehicles running red lights, I recently instructed senior Safety and Service Delivery staff to undertake a review of our arrangements for the recruitment, training, supervision and monitoring of Operators. That review will now be accelerated following Friday’s tragic accident.

TTC Operators have a tough job to navigate ever-more congested streets and it is a task that they perform with a high degree of professionalism and competence, day in and day out.

That said, I firmly believe this review is necessary as we work together to keep the TTC and its customers safe.
