The results of the first TTC Employee Engagement Survey
The results of the first TTC Employee Engagement Survey are now in and as promised, we are going to share them with you and act upon what you have told us.
R.A. Malatest and Associates, the research company that conducted the Employee Engagement Survey last fall, has recently presented its survey summary report to the TTC Executive, and we have more recently shared it with officials from all four unions. That summary will be made available on the Human Resources intranet site and The Coupler website. When Malatest completes its full report, scheduled in March, it will also be posted online.
So what did the summary report reveal? Right off the top, 36 per cent of the workforce, or 4,808 employees, responded to the survey, which was conducted from Oct. 27 to Dec. 8. That’s a great return for an inaugural survey of this magnitude, considering the diversity of our 24/7 operation. This survey will serve as a baseline for future surveys (every two years) and allow the TTC to properly measure itself over time.
The survey questions were divided into eight categories: job; safety; team; company; working environment; manager/supervisor; training and development; and performance and reward. When asked to rate your satisfaction with the TTC as an employer, the average score was 7.8 on a scale of one to 10, which is a high score from those who responded.
I promised that we would ask you how you wanted to change the TTC and that we’d act on the results. I believe we have a solid starting point now to begin to understand how you feel and to improve the culture of our organization. To ensure this happens, together we need to explore the underlying reasons for the issues that you’ve highlighted in the results and develop a list of actions to address them.
Malatest is also finalizing the departmental level results. As these become available by the end of March, we will begin communicating them to all of you.

Employee Engagement Survey full report now available
The Employee Engagement Survey: Detailed Organizational-Level Report is now available here and on the Human Resources intranet site (internal website).
The 164-page report prepared by research company, R.A. Malatest, outlines in full detail the results of the employee survey conducted last fall.
Here are the next steps in the employee engagement process:
- The detailed report will be presented to the management group at its Leadership forum in April, followed by group-, department-, and team-level reports and discussion sessions with employees across the organization.
- Throughout April and May, TTC departments will be conducting sessions to discuss the results, identify the underlying issues and develop action plans to address them.
- Once the department-level sessions have been completed, action plans will be created at the team, department, group and organization level. Each action plan will have an assigned owner responsible for tracking its progress and its ultimate delivery.
Malatest is currently preparing group- and department-level reports, which will include mean scores for teams of 10 or more employees. Once all the reports are delivered in March, the research company will have completed its work on the employee survey.
The key action areas identified in the detailed survey report include:
- Employee health and well-being.
- Work spaces and facilities.
- Management/employee relations.
- Management/employee decision making.
- Information sharing and collaboration.
- Meaningful recognition.
- Personal and career development.
- Job motivation.
Thirty-six per cent of the workforce responded to the survey, which was conducted between Oct. 27 and Dec. 8, 2014. Of the more than 4,800 employees who responded, 23 per cent were unionized and 90 per cent were non-unionized. The inaugural survey will serve as a baseline for employee engagement surveys that will be conducted every two years.
