Update on subway “uploading” discussions

Yesterday (December 13), Toronto City Council debated and approved a report regarding “uploading” the subway to the Province.

Yesterday (December 13), Toronto City Council debated and approved a report regarding “uploading” the subway to the Province. The report, Engagement with the Province on Toronto’s Transit System, can be read here: https://www.toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis/2019/cc/bgrd/backgroundfile-122379.pdf.

Specifically, the report authorizes the City Manager, in consultation with me, to negotiate a terms of reference that will guide discussions with the Province about what exactly constitutes “uploading.”

As many know, there remain more questions than answers about what “uploading” means. The Province has said publicly that the TTC would continue to operate the subway and collect fare revenues. But we need to understand more. The TTC is a complex, integrated system that, of course, can’t be easily compartmentalized.

The City and the TTC will meet with the Province to fully understand “uploading” in the context of the subway, and report back to City Council and the TTC Board in the first quarter of 2019.

As an employee of the TTC, it’s important you know that this issue has my full attention. As your CEO, employee and public safety will never be compromised, and I will always provide my best professional advice to City Council and the TTC Board when it comes to the service we provide, and the exceptional reputation that the TTC is known for around the world.

The TTC is a very special place. I am proud to be your CEO, and am proud of the dedication I see day in and day out by so many of you. I wish you and your family a safe and happy holidays, and a wonderful Christmas season.
