Message from the Executives

Office of the Chief Executive

Our recognition of Indigenous Heritage Month and Pride Month culminated in grand style last weekend with participation in Toronto’s Pride Parade and our first-ever Pow Wow at Mount Dennis. The back-to-back events were both exciting and uplifting celebrations, and I couldn’t be more proud with the spirit and comradery on display.

As you know, in 2020 we committed to making the TTC a more diverse, equitable and inclusive organization for employees and customers. It was a great privilege to be at both events this past weekend and watch it unfold. A big thank you to all those who were involved – I know there’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes.

Earlier this week, the Toronto and Region Chapter of the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) hosted two virtual events in recognition of Indigenous Heritage Month and Pride. The first event involved a discussion on the history and resilience of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nations. It was hosted by the TTC’s Anti-Racism Policy Consultant Brittany Manu and featured Darin P. Wybenga, a Traditional Knowledge and Land Use Co-ordinator.

The second event dealt with Trans inclusion in the workplace with a focus on how to use inclusive language. The session was hosted by Gayle Hollett, Transgender Woman, Activist for Natural Inclusion, and also one of our Operators. The guest speaker was Sandeep Nair, Business Development Manager for Pride at Work Canada. If you weren’t able to watch the sessions, they will be available on the COMTO Toronto and Region website in the near future.

July 1st is Canada’s 155th birthday – it’s a day for both celebration as well as reflection. And having become a Canadian citizen myself a few short years ago, I can tell you this day holds special meaning for me and my family.

There are many great events around our city for all to enjoy over the Canada Day long weekend. The TTC can get you and your family and friends to all of them.

Stay safe and celebrate responsibly. And thank you for your service if you’re working on Canada Day.
