From the Diversity and Human Rights Department

The Diversity and Human Rights Department recently introduced new tools and training to help guide managers and employees towards more inclusive practices at work. The Diversity and Inclusion Lens and Toolkit were developed to encourage employees to see perspectives different from their own.

What is the Lens?

  • The Lens guides managers and employees to consider the potential impacts of projects, actions and initiatives on diverse employees and customers.
  • It helps identify when steps should be taken to eliminate or reduce any negative impacts or unintended barriers.

Diversity and Inclusion Lens

What is the Toolkit?

  • The Toolkit complements the Lens by including a set of questions to prompt us to think about diversity and inclusion in our daily work. Ultimately, it helps us work together more inclusively and deliver more inclusive services.
  • It applies to all the work we do at the TTC, including: communications; hosting meetings and events; conducting consultation and research; developing policies, programs and services; construction, expansion and service planning; hiring and promotion; training; working with others; and leading and managing people.

Diversity and Inclusion Toolkit

How should you use these tools in your work?

  • Refer to the Lens and Toolkit checklist at both the design and implementation stages of projects, programs and services.
  • Use the tools to draft the Equity/Accessibility section of Board Reports.
  • Use the tools for inclusive hiring, promotion and succession planning.
  • Review the Inclusive Language Guide (starting on p. 41 of the Toolkit) to learn and use the most inclusive language with co-workers and customers.

For more information, please visit the Diversity and Human Rights intranet site (internal website). The D&I Lens and Toolkit are internal TTC documents, for use by TTC managers and employees. If you have any feedback or suggestions on how to improve this Lens or Toolkit, please contact the Diversity and Human Rights Department at 416-393-3324.

Note: The attached toolkit was updated June 2017.
