TTC designs, builds, delivers new Scarborough Busway

TTC riders in Scarborough now have a dedicated bus corridor, providing faster, safer and more reliable service.

The busway runs along a four-kilometre stretch, following the same general route as the former Line 3 SRT.

The SRT Bus Replacement project was delivered in two phases. The first phase, which was completed in 2024, increased bus terminal capacities at Scarborough Centre and Kennedy. It included modifying the bus platform at Scarborough Centre Bus Terminal, building a temporary bus terminal at Kennedy Station, and introducing various transit priority measures, such as bus priority lanes, traffic signal modifications, and changes at key intersections to allow for more efficient movement of buses in mixed traffic.

The second phase involved converting the SRT right-of-way into a busway. Buses now operate in the converted busway from Kennedy Station, stopping at Tara/Mooregate Avenues, Lawrence Avenue East, and Ellesmere Road, and use priority bus lanes on Ellesmere Road to reach Scarborough Centre Bus Terminal. A trip between Scarborough Centre and Kennedy takes approximately 15 minutes.

The TTC Board adopted an acceleration plan for the busway earlier this year. Rather than completing the project in 2027 as originally scheduled, the new Scarborough Busway opened September 30.
