Happy 100th anniversary to the TTC

Happy 100th anniversary to the TTC!

On this day 100 years ago, the first of September in 1921, the Toronto Transportation Commission began rolling. Today marks our 100th year of service to the citizens of Toronto and beyond.

From horse-drawn cars to electric trolleys to ferry boats to our current fleet of modern accessible buses, streetcars and trains, the past century has seen the TTC grow into one of the most visible and vital public service organizations, not just in the Greater Toronto Area, but across North America. The TTC is the most heavily used public transit system in Canada. We’ve become a fully integrated, multimodal network that has carried more than 32 billion riders since its inception in 1921.

Looking back at the last 100 years, and how the city and the TTC have grown up together, there’s no doubt that public transit has played a massive role in the development of our great city. We’ve been along for the ride in the city’s best moments, and in some of its toughest – and we will continue to be there for the people of Toronto. That means everything from modernizing our fleets, to becoming more green, to striving to be a more accessible, diverse and inclusive organization.

September 1st is a special day for the TTC. This day belongs as much to our retired employees as it does to our current workforce. Together, we’ve built a reputation as one of the finest and safest transit systems in the world.

This reputation has been the result of a tireless dedication to providing the best service possible to meet our customers’ evolving needs. Our greatest asset is a skilled and professional workforce, which has contributed greatly to the city’s economic and social well-being. Our commitment to excellence and public service is seen in the pride employees have in their work every single day.

Public transit is a people business. Our ability to move people efficiently means prosperity; it means cleaner air; and it means helping build a greater Toronto that will keep thriving for decades to come while providing billions of dollars in economic benefits every year.

As CEO, I’d like to extend my sincerest thanks to our Commissioners, City Council, our union partners, our funding partners, our employees and pensioners, and all of our customers.

Happy 100th anniversary to the TTC and continued success in the future!

Stay safe.
