Message from the Executives

Office of the Chief Executive

Tomorrow, the TTC will say goodbye to the SRT era in Toronto.

The TTC is hosting an open house for employees, their families and customers on September 23 at Scarborough Centre Station. Everyone is invited to celebrate and salute Line 3 after nearly 40 years of RT rail service in Scarborough.

The Scarborough RT officially opened on March 22, 1985 as the world’s first Intermediate Capacity Transit System. The new technology featured linear induction motors, steerable axle-trucks and 12-metre rail cars that were computer-controlled, with an optional manual operation feature.

Last month, the TTC confirmed that train service, originally scheduled to end in November, would not restart following the July 24 derailment. Elements of the Line 3 replacement plan are being installed so that TTC riders are supported and can effectively plan their trips.

I am grateful to all TTC operations and maintenance crews for the exceptional work performed over the years to keep the line going well beyond its design life. I hope to see many of you at the event tomorrow.

TTC Board meets next week
Next week’s Board meeting will be the first for new TTC Chair Jamaal Myers as well as several new Commissioners. The agenda includes reports for review and approval on key topics, including Easier Access and the SRT decommissioning.

There is also a report regarding safety on the TTC, which summarizes how we are working with our partners to address some larger societal issues. Earlier this week, we announced with Mayor Olivia Chow that we are recommending the addition of 178 frontline staff to support our safety initiatives. These new hires will act as high-visibility Customer Service Agents and bus, streetcar and subway Supervisors. The report also proposes extending a number of safety and security initiatives launched earlier this year and recommends actions to address the anticipated increase in the use of the transit network for shelter this winter.

The September 26 meeting takes place at the Scarborough Civic Centre. The public meeting begins at 10 a.m. and will be live-streamed on the official TTC YouTube Channel.

Finally, the TTC/United Way campaign is in full swing. I want to remind everyone that payroll deduction is the easy way to donate. Please give what you can using the online donation form.

Stay safe.
