Message from the Executives
Office of the Chief Executive
On Wednesday night, the TTC was proud to participate in the annual Underground Freedom Train Ride to celebrate Emancipation Day on August 1. This special event attracts hundreds of participants and spectators who gather to mark the role of the Underground Railroad in Canadian history.
The Blackhurst Cultural Centre hosted the symbolic midnight ride on Line 1 from Union to Downsview Park stations. Activities along the way included singing, poetry readings and drum playing. This year, organizers thanked and recognized Subway Operator Greg Northcott for his many years of service as train conductor.
Recognizing Emancipation Day, and Emancipation Month, is not only a celebration of the past, but also a reminder of the ongoing work needed to create a more equitable, inclusive, and welcoming transit system for all. The TTC is proud to help make this connection to an important moment in Canadian history and commemorate Emancipation Day.
TTC participates in Toronto Caribbean Carnival
I am really looking forward to joining TTC carnival goers at this year’s Toronto Caribbean Carnival Grand Parade this weekend.
A specially wrapped Wheel-Trans bus has been touring our work locations to promote this exciting event, and close to 300 employees and guests are signed up to participate in the parade. Along with the Wheel-Trans vehicle, we will also have our Bacchanal bus and one of our maintenance flatbed trucks. I am looking forward to seeing everyone Saturday.
In celebration of Caribbean heritage, we are featuring employees on workplace screens and posters through the month of August. Thanks to all of our participants!
Stay safe.
