Message from the Executives

Office of the Chief Executive

The TTC proudly celebrates Asian Heritage Month in May, a time to honour the rich cultures and contributions of Asian communities. Throughout the month, we will be featuring the unique experiences of Asian employees across our internal communication channels.

Our diversity is what makes us great. My thanks to those employees who share their stories, insights, histories and traditions. Diversity and inclusion are priorities for the TTC and it is important that we reflect the communities we serve. We are working hard to ensure the TTC is a welcoming place for everyone.

Track-level fire on Line 2
I want to take this opportunity to once again thank everyone who worked through last weekend to get regular subway service on a portion of Line 2 back in time for Monday morning’s commute.

Operations and Infrastructure crews replaced and spliced more than 5,000 feet of signal and communication cable, in addition to the junction box that was destroyed in last week’s fire. My thanks again to all the groups across the TTC for their extra efforts, as well as our partners at Toronto Police Service for helping manage our shuttle buses through traffic.

A fire in the open cut near Islington Station on April 25 shut down subway service both ways between Kipling and Jane through the weekend (subsequently reduced to Kipling-Islington). The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Bargaining update
Since February, bargaining teams from the TTC and ATU Local 113 have been working hard to reach a fair negotiated collective agreement. ATU Local 113 is our largest union partner, representing approximately 11,500 Operators, Collectors, maintenance workers, stations staff, and other frontline employees.

Earlier this week, ATU Local 113 announced that its members have voted in favour of a strike mandate. It’s important to know that this vote does not mean a strike is imminent, and no strike deadline has been set at this time. Teams from the TTC and Local 113 remain at the table to negotiate a new collective agreement.

We are committed to keeping customers and employees updated during the bargaining process. Updates will continue to be provided to employees via our internal communication channels and on ttc.ca/bargaining.

Finally, next week is Mental Health Week. It serves as an important reminder to take care of your mental wellness year-round and check in on loved ones. In this week’s newsletter, you’ll find additional resources to check in on your well-being.

Stay safe.
