Message from the Executives

Office of the Chief Executive

On Wednesday, we heard directly from our customers at our annual forum on accessible transit. The feedback we receive through this public forum is constructive, unfiltered, and essential for helping us improve the accessible conventional and specialized services we deliver to our diverse customer base.

Feedback from customers this year addressed many topics ranging from ramp deployments, signage design, access hubs, ride reservations, and cancellations.

I said last week how impressed I am with the services the TTC provides. I want to compliment the staff at Wheel-Trans for the wonderful job they are doing in bringing back ridership. In the most recent year-to-date comparison, Wheel-Trans is carrying nearly 17 per cent more customers in 2024 over 2023. More than 56,000 of those trips were booked through the Wheel-Trans mobile app launched last September.

TTC ridership overall in 2024 is on the rise and on track to surpass last year’s total carried.

Board meeting next week
Next Tuesday, I am attending my first TTC Board meeting at City Hall. A number of major reports will be before Commissioners, including a follow-up on the Fare Compliance Action Plan. Among the responses to Board motions included in the report are the closing of crash gates, phasing out cash fares at stations and legacy fare media, strategies to count fares on buses, and phasing out the acceptance of undated Child PRESTO cards.

Across the TTC network, full and partial fare evasion at the crash gates alone is depriving our system of more than $20 million a year – money that can be used to improve services.

Other reports on the agenda are Line 2 Modernization, Innovation and Sustainability Strategy, and the Financial and Major Projects Update. The Board meeting will be live-streamed on the Official TTC YouTube Channel starting at 10 a.m.

TTC/United Way campaign underway
At this time of year, our community, through the United Way Greater Toronto, asks the TTC for its support in helping people live with dignity and independence. I know TTC employees have had a long history of responding with an outpouring of care and compassion. Please show your generosity again and give what you can through payroll deductions or at the many fundraising events getting underway in our workplaces. Thank you to all our volunteers for the work you do.
