Message from the Executives

Office of the Chief Executive

I had the opportunity to walk the elevated section of the decommissioned SRT from McCowan to Ellesmere.

Dear colleagues,

This past week, I had the opportunity to walk the elevated section of the decommissioned SRT from McCowan to Ellesmere alongside our Property, Planning and Development team and City planning staff. It’s a striking piece of infrastructure that has shaped the Scarborough landscape for decades by opening access to rapid transit for thousands and driving significant economic development.

As stewards of this legacy, we have a responsibility to ensure its next chapter continues to benefit Scarborough. I’m pleased to share that the TTC and City staff are working closely to bring forward proposals for its future use. Meanwhile, from Ellesmere to Kennedy, work is progressing to convert the at-grade portion of the SRT into a dedicated Bus Rapid Transit corridor. I was encouraged to hear about plans to accelerate construction and have it ready for service by the end of next year.

Last night, I had the privilege of participating in the Emancipation Day Underground Freedom Train Ride, in support of the Blackhurst Cultural Centre. The journey from Vaughan Metropolitan Centre to Union Station was a powerful reminder of the resilience, courage, and hope of those who claimed freedom in Canada. I want to thank our Diversity and Events teams for their outstanding work in making this annual event possible and meaningful.

Finally, I’d like to recognize our TTC Special Constables Community Engagement team. While passing through Bloor-Yonge Station last week, I was delighted to see them hosting a pop-up event – engaging with customers about safety, sharing information, and handing out fun items for kids. It was a great example of how we continue to build trust and connection with the communities we serve.

As we move forward, I encourage each of you to stay engaged, whether it’s by participating in community events, sharing ideas for improvement, or simply connecting with your colleagues and customers. Your voice and your actions help shape the TTC every day. Let’s keep building a transit system we’re all proud of.

Thank you all for the work you do every day.

With gratitude and resolve,

Mandeep S. Lali
