Message from the Executives

Office of the Chief Executive

Sydnie's compassion, quick thinking, and dedication reflect the very best of who we are.

The TTC safely and reliably moves millions of people across Toronto every day. The people of this city depend on us, and we take that responsibility seriously. We’re proud to serve Toronto, and we strive to be good citizens in everything we do.

This past Saturday, Sydnie Campbell, a streetcar Operator on the 512 St Clair route, exemplified that spirit in a truly remarkable way. At 11 p.m. near Oakwood Avenue, Sydnie saw a young child walking alone on the road. The child was barefoot and disoriented. A passing driver briefly stopped to speak with the child, then drove away, leaving the child alone.

Sydnie responded immediately. She brought her streetcar to a safe stop, opened the doors, and welcomed the child aboard. She then took her vehicle out of service and stayed with the child until police and the child’s grateful parents arrived. The child, around 10 years old and with special needs, had walked a kilometre away from home.

I met Sydnie this week at Leslie Barns before her shift. I wanted to hear her story firsthand and thank her personally. Her compassion, quick thinking, and dedication reflect the very best of who we are.

Sydnie’s actions remind us that we are more than a transit system. We’re a people business. Whether it’s helping someone get to work, school, or home, or stepping up in a moment of crisis, TTC employees make a difference every day.

As we prepare for the start of the new school year next week, Sydnie’s story is a powerful example of what it means to put safety first. Children and youth across Toronto will be returning to classrooms, many riding the TTC with nervous excitement, and some for the very first time. This moment calls on all of us to stay alert, act responsibly, and offer extra care and courtesy to those who may need a helping hand.

This week, I joined a team of Special Constables and Revenue Protection Officers at Bathurst Station as they engaged with customers to promote transit safety and fare compliance. It was inspiring to see the positive response from riders and the professionalism and dedication of our officers. Their presence reinforces our shared commitment to keeping the TTC safe, welcoming, and fair for everyone.

Finally, as this weekend marks the last long weekend of the summer, I want to thank all employees who will be working through it to keep our city moving safely. For those taking time off, I wish you a safe and restful weekend.

With gratitude and resolve,

Mandeep S. Lali
Chief Executive Officer
