Message from the Executives

Office of the Chief Executive

As February comes to an end, I want to take a moment to reflect on Black History Month (BHM) at the TTC. It was my first time recognizing the month here and I want to thank everyone who contributed to making this month a success. Your dedication and engagement were evident and will have a lasting impact.

Under the theme City of Belonging: Celebrating Toronto’s Black Community Builders, the TTC recognized individuals whose leadership and contributions have helped shape the city we live in today. Their work has strengthened communities, advanced equity, and fostered spaces where all Torontonians can belong.

We were proud to play a role in honouring Black history in a meaningful and visible way. The BHM-wrapped TTC buses, in partnership with AstroSankofa Arts Initiatives, became a moving symbol of history, culture, and resilience — highlighting the power of creative expression in preserving stories and inspiring dialogue.

Our employees played a significant role in bringing this month’s celebrations to life. Through events, school visits, and community collaborations, we helped amplify Black voices, promote representation, and deepen our shared understanding of Black history. From hosting the BHM-wrapped bus at divisions to engaging with local schools and organizations, we demonstrated our collective commitment to making Black history accessible and visible.

The Black Transit Worker Association (BTWA) also hosted a BHM Gala on February 22, during which Mayor Olivia Chow, union leadership, employees and myself, had an opportunity to celebrate together.

While Black History Month may be coming to a close, our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging remains year-round. Through initiatives like the TTC’s Anti-Racism Strategy, the Diversity Calendar, and continued partnerships with community organizations, we will keep building a culture where every employee and customer feels represented, valued, and included.

Let’s continue this important work — today and every day.
