Fare inspections on bus network

What a great week this was. We welcomed the arrival of spring with pleasant weather and celebrated Transit Operator and Worker Appreciation Day. Thank you all for your outstanding work serving our growing ridership.

I hope you had a chance to take part in some workplace activities. Best of luck to those in the Cheers for Peers contest – there’s still time to nominate a colleague or team before March 28.

A special thanks to Mayor Chow for her official proclamation on March 18, recognizing the dedication of those who provide safe and reliable transit for our city.

Fare inspections on bus network
This week, we began asking TTC bus riders to show proof of payment as we expand fare evasion enforcement across all transit modes. Adding the bus network to these efforts strengthens our plan to recover approximately $140 million in lost revenue annually.

When people don’t pay, it impacts our ability to improve service and keep fares down. We want those who cheat the system to know we take fare evasion seriously – it’s fraud and illegal.

Our Fare Inspectors uphold accountability, transparency, and public trust. In addition to trained professionals, we’re using uniformed staff and body-worn cameras to record customer interactions. I’m proud of this team’s leadership as we innovate with new technologies and procedures.

Malvern visit
Last week, I visited Malvern Division and Garage, joining Bus Transportation Head Robert Smith and his team for a tour of a day in the life at Malvern. It was a great opportunity to connect with transportation and maintenance workers, hear their insights, and – of course – drive a bus around the property under the watchful eye of our trainer!
