Honouring the National Day of Mourning

Today, April 28, is the National Day of Mourning to honour those in our workforce and across Canada who have lost their lives, suffered serious injuries, or experienced illness due to workplace incidents. At the TTC, our flags have been lowered in tribute to those individuals and their families.

Safety is a cornerstone priority here at the TTC. It is a daily responsibility that guides how we plan, operate, and support one another. Our Safety, Health and Environment (SH&E) Management System provides the structure in how we manage risks, strengthen safety performance, and uphold commitments set out in the SH&E Policy. The system is designed to minimize workplace injuries, occupational illnesses, and environmental impact.

A safe workplace is one where every employee has the tools, conditions, and support needed to return home safely at the end of each shift. I want to take the opportunity to acknowledge the employees who serve on our more than 50 joint management/union Health and Safety Committees. Their work often behind the scenes drives continuous improvement and reinforces the accountability we expect across the TTC.

This weekend, TTC employees participated in the Toronto Steps for Life charity walk to commemorate those affected by workplace tragedies, accidents, or illnesses. The stories shared by survivors and families were powerful reminders of the human impact behind every safety decision we make. Their experiences underscore why our commitment to safety must be unwavering.

Workplace safety also includes mental health and well-being. The TTC offers health, wellness, and peer support services, including the Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) by TELUS Health. Confidential resources are available 24/7 at 1-800-572-0039 or online at one.telushealth.com.

As we reflect today, let this serve as a reminder of the standard we must uphold every day. Our commitment to safety is not symbolic – it is operational, continuous, and essential to building a workplace where every employee feels protected and supported. I encourage you to share any ideas or suggestions you may have to help strengthen safety across the TTC. Your insights are invaluable as we continue working toward a safer workplace for everyone.

With gratitude and resolve,
