On September 30, we recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. It’s a solemn day to honour residential school Survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and acknowledge the lasting impacts of residential schools, which continue to be felt today by Indigenous Peoples, families, and communities across Canada.

On this day, we wear orange as a visible expression of support for Survivors, their families, and Indigenous communities.

I encourage you to take a few moments today to pause and reflect. Consider what you have learned, what remains to be learned, and how each of us can help build a future rooted in respect, understanding, and reconciliation.

At the TTC, we recognize that reconciliation is an ongoing responsibility. While it begins with individual learning and reflection, it also requires sustained organizational commitment, accountability, and action. Each of us can contribute by learning about Indigenous histories and cultures, listening to Indigenous voices, challenging our assumptions, and treating one another with dignity and respect.

Earlier this month, we came together at the TTC’s Every Child Matters Flag Raising Ceremony, where we had the privilege of hearing from Indigenous voices, including TTC LRT Operator Lyndon Akiwenzie, and community members Elder Michael Cheena and the Red Bear Singers.

Their stories, lived experiences, and perspectives served as a powerful reminder that reconciliation begins with listening. Listening is an act of respect, an act of learning, and often the first step toward meaningful change.

Let’s honour the children, support the Survivors, and continue the important work of turning listening into understanding, and understanding into action.
