National Day of Mourning 2023
Today, Friday, April 28, is National Day of Mourning. All across the Toronto Transit Commission, flags will be lowered to half-staff as a tribute to those in our workforce who have perished or suffered serious injury or illness in the workplace. This is a day, also, when employees are encouraged to take a moment to reflect on the importance of safety at the TTC.
TTC CEO Rick Leary and Union Presidents – Marvin Alfred, ATU Local 113; Gaetano Franco, CUPE Local 2; Chris Morton, CUPE Local 470; Dariusz Nowotny, CUPE Local 5089; and Tim Sullivan, IAMAW Lodge 235 – released a joint message of reflection to all employees:
“Safety is the cornerstone of everything we do at the TTC and a core value for the organization. Operating, maintaining and protecting, on a 24/7 basis, a system that carries the third largest ridership in North America requires a dedicated, committed and safety-focused workforce. Above all else, TTC employees are committed to protecting the safety and health of their co-workers, their customers and the communities in which we operate.
