Safety Notice: TTC expands naloxone distribution
The TTC has taken further steps to improve access to naloxone to help prevent and respond to drug overdoses in the system.
Effective January 17, 2024, the administration of naloxone by TTC employees will be expanded to operations Supervisors.
Starting January 17, 2024, Fare Inspectors will also begin carrying naloxone, similar to Special Constables, who currently carry and administer naloxone. Since these employees are mobile and respond to situations throughout the TTC, carrying naloxone will ensure they can readily access and administer it when required.
These critical steps are in addition to supports already available on the system. In September 2023, the TTC improved access to naloxone in TTC stations (in collector booths) and made naloxone available in AED boxes at other TTC facilities, such as offices, garages and carhouses.
The TTC also developed a Naloxone Administration Protocol and associated resources to outline corporate expectations regarding naloxone administration.
Who is now designated to administer naloxone?
Currently, the following employees are designated to administer naloxone:
• Special Constables.
• Fare Inspectors.
• Station supervisory staff.
• Mobile and Chief Supervisors.
• OTC Instructors.
• Designated first-aid attendants.
Designated employees are certified in first aid and complete a naloxone e-learning module. Employees may also provide the naloxone to a bystander who volunteers to administer it.
Please remember that all TTC employees are responsible for initiating the emergency response. You should call Transit Control if you notice someone in distress.
Where is naloxone available at the TTC?
Access to naloxone continues to be available at all TTC stations (in Collector Booths and Hubs). Access to naloxone is also available at other TTC facilities (i.e. offices, garages, carhouses, etc.) located in identified AED boxes.
What if a naloxone kit is missing or damaged?
If a kit is damaged or missing, notify the Station Supervisor or work location Manager immediately.
What support is available for employees involved in an overdose incident?
Supervisors and Managers are to offer and arrange for appropriate support for employees involved in a suspected opioid overdose incident.
Employee supports include:
• Onsite trauma counselling.
• EFAP (Employee and Family Assistance Plan).
• Trauma Assist Program.
• Peer Support Program.
What resources are available?
The following naloxone resources are available on the Safety and Environment Department’s Intranet page:
• Naloxone Administration Protocol.
• Naloxone Safety Notices.
• Naloxone General Information and Resources.
• Naloxone Safety Talks.
If you have any questions about naloxone at the TTC, please speak with your Manager or Supervisor. For additional naloxone resources and waste disposal, refer to the Safety and Environment Department’s Intranet page.
